Pleasant Prairie Skating School U.S. Figure Skating Basic Skills Program
The Pleasant Prairie Skating School offers classes designed by U.S. Figure Skating. The Basic Skills program is a beginning ice skating program that is fun, challenging and rewarding. Participation in the program will enable beginning skaters of all ages and abilities to learn the fundamentals of the sport and begin a lifetime commitment to health and wellness.

Learn to Skate parent & Tot
Ages 3-5 and a parent. For pre-school beginners who have never skated. Students will learn the proper way to fall and get up, marching, two-foot glides and backward wiggles, all while playing fun games with mom or dad!

Snowplow Sam 1
Ages 3-5. For preschool-age children to develop preliminary coordination and strength necessary to move on skates. Skaters will learn the proper way to sit and stand up on the ice, march in place and on the ice, march and glide and dip in place all while playing fun games!

Snowplow Sam 2
Ages 3-5. For preschool-age children to develop preliminary coordination and strength necessary to move on skates. Skaters will learn to march followed by a long glide, dip while moving, backward wiggles, forward two foot swizzles, 2-3 in a row, rocking horse, two foot hop in place.

Snowplow Sam 3
Ages 3-5. For preschool-age children to develop preliminary coordination and strength necessary to move on skates. Skaters will learn forward skating, 8-10 steps, forward one foot glide, right & left, forward two foot swizzles, 4-6 in a row, backward two foot swizzles, 4-6 in a row, forward snowplow stop with skid (one foot or both) and curves. Note: Upon completion of this level skaters are eligible to go directly to Basic 2.

The Basic Eights
The “Basic Skills” are the fundamentals of the sport. These eight levels of the program introduce the fundamental moves – forward skating, backward skating, stops, crossovers and turns. Upon completion of the Basic 1-8 levels, skaters will have the basic knowledge of the sport enabling them to advance to the more specialized areas of skating- free skating, dance, pairs and synchronized.

Basic 1
Ages 6 & up. Skaters will learn to sit on ice and stand up, march forward across the ice, forward two foot glide, dip, forward swizzles, 6-8 in a row, backward wiggles, 6-8 in a row, snowplow stop (one foot or both), rocking horse (2-3 in a row), two foot hop in place.

Basic 2
Ages 6 & up or passed Snowplow Sam 3 or Basic 1. Skaters will learn forward one foot glides, right & left, backward two foot glide, backward swizzles, 6-8 in a row, two foot turn from forward to backward in place, moving snowplow stop (one foot or both), and forward alternating ˝ swizzle pumps in a straight line (slalom like pattern).

Basic 3
Age 6 & up. Pre-requisite: Basic 2.Skaters will learn forward stroking showing correct use of blade, forward ˝ swizzle pumps on a circle, clockwise & counterclockwise, 6-8 consecutive, moving forward to backward two foot turn, clockwise & counterclockwise, backward one foot glides, right & left, forward slalom, two foot spin, two revolutions.

Basic 4
Ages 6 & up. Pre-requisite: Basic 3. Skaters will learn forward outside edge on a circle, right & left, forward inside edge on a circle, right & left, forward crossovers, clockwise & counterclockwise, 5 consecutive, forward outside three turn from a stand still position, right & left, backward ˝ swizzle pumps on a circle, clockwise & counterclockwise, backward stroking, backward stroking, backward snowplow stop, right & left.

Basic 5
Ages 6 & up. Pre-requisite: Basic 4. Skaters will learn backward outside edge on a circle, right & left, backward inside edge on a circle, right & left, backward crossovers, clockwise & counter clockwise, beginning one foot spin, minimum of 3 revolutions, optional entry & free foot position, hockey stop, side toe hop- both directions.

Basic 6
Ages 6 & up. Pre-requisite: Basic 5. Skaters will learn forward inside three turn, right & left, from a standstill position, moving backward to forward two foot turn on a circle, clockwise & counterclockwise, T-stop, right & left, bunny hop, forward arabesque/spiral o a straight line, right or left, forward lunge, right or left.

Basic 7
Ages 6 & up. Pre-requisite: Basic 6. Skaters will learn forward inside open Mohawk from a standstill position, right to left & left to right, backward outside edge to forward outside edge, transition on a circle, right & left, ballet jump, right or left, backward crossovers to a backward outside edge glide (landing position) clockwise & counterclockwise, forward inside pivots, right & left.

Basic 8
Ages 6 & up. Pre-requisite: Basic 7. Skaters will learn moving forward outside three turn on a circle, right & left, moving forward inside three turn on a circle, right & left, combination move: forward crossovers (2) into forward inside Mohawk, step down and cross behind, step into forward inside edge, repeat three times clockwise and counterclockwise, one foot upright spin, optional entry & free foot position , waltz jump , mazurka, right or left.

Power Clinic
Freestyle 3 and up. Geared towards increasing skaters’ endurance and edge quality, taught by a US Figure Skating Regional, Sectional, National, International & Jr. World coach, PSA Rated & Ranked.

Spin/Jump Clinic
Level Freestyle 1 and up only. Participants will focus on advanced spin and jump techniques. Skaters will not be tested during class.

Ballet for Skaters
For any skater age 5 and up who wants to improve their posture, flexibility, strength, and technique and musicality. Taught by one of our skating/dance instructors in our ballet studio with music accompaniment.

Pilates for Skaters
Ages 8 & up. Improve the skater’s core strength and flexibility. Taught by one of our skating instructors who is a certified Pilates instructor.

Private Lessons
All ages. Private lessons are encouraged to supplement group classes for skaters wishing to progress more quickly or skate competitively. To be matched up with the proper coach, fill out a Private Lesson Request Form available at the Guest Services Desk.
